Near the church of The
Lady of Sorrows, we can
find the church of The
Suffrage which gives
evidence to a
structure with a
rectangular
plan.
The
façade,
which turns orient,
shows signs of two
small walled doors in
travertine, tracing
back to XIV century
(1300).
We
can still detect a
frieze in terracotta,
in roman style, a
travertine architrave
showing frieze of the
Byzantine period, and
on a stone, a T (tau),
symbol of the name of
God.
Such, façade
presents the original
entrance of the church
of St. Antonio
Abbot.
On the left of the
entrance, we can
note the remains of a
deteriorated
fresco, attributed
to Simone De Magistris
(1534-1600),
symbolising "St.
Antonio".
From the
recent entrance
tracing back to the
XVII century (1600) and
located in Via
Vannicola Defendente,
we can reach it
internally; boarded
by a nave and two
aisles, built in the
XIX century (1800).
The right arches
display two frescoes:
one representing
"Gaspare del Bufalo", a
preaching Saint, of
1821 and the other an
crafted "Madonna del
Soccorso"(XV
century).
On the rear wall, in
the niche, there is a
fake wooden skeleton of
the XVII century
(1600), symbolising
"
the Death", which
the Company of Suffrage
took as emblem, in
procession.
In
1450 the Offidian
Vannarello di Giovan
Pietro, inaugurated, in
few rooms of the
church, an old people's
home called "Hospital
of St. Antonio
Abbot".
In 1873 the
temple was dedicated to
the Virgin
Mary.
