The custom of lighting
and carrying the
"vlurd" through the
streets of Offida, on
the night of carnival,
is documented back till
1814, like it appears
from the article "Un
documento sui Bogardi"
written by Guglielmo
Allevi on OPHIS on
03/03/1895, there is
also a notice from the
office of the
podestà of
Offida that says:
· The
night clamour, cannot
be continued longer
than 2am; after this
time each person must
return to their proper
families, without
disturb the public and
private peace.
· The
torches must not be
higher than three arms,
and it will be
forbidden to set fire
to the doors and
windows of the local
residents.
Offida 02702/1814, on
Shrove Tuesday, on the falling of the night, the "vlurd" are
lit (faggots of cane, internally filled with straw).
It leaves from Piazza XX Settembre, at the front the congregation
"Ciorpento" sings "
Addio Ninetta addio" and a fire snake passes through
the historical street walls of Offida, in a game of beating
shadows and lights, It is not possible to imagine the "vlurd"
in another town.
When the walk is finished, there is a big bonfire in the
square and the masks run in a circle around, and when the
fire that lights the square turn off, the square returns heralding
the Lentence Silence.
