The local stories tell
very little about the origins of this manifestation; for some
it is the recall of ancient bullfightings introduced by the
Spanish in occasion of their domination in Italy; for others
it is the representation of an ancient custom orientated
to brighten the table of the poor on Shrove Tuesdayl, it consists
of giving the ox meat previously hunted and killed.
It
is certain that till
1819 the ox was
real, reference
given by some
texts.
That of the fake bull is to hunt the bull,
a sort of
bullfight, whom the animal doesn't load a single individual,
but a multitude of individuals.
In the afternoon (2.30 pm), of the
Friday before carnival, a model of an bull, made of wooden
frame, covered by a white cloth and held by two men (one on
top, another on the side), starts running from mainly years,
from the sport field (House of Falco), then proceeds through
the streets of the town, followed by a multitude of young people,
dressed as bullfighters or the classical guazzarò.
Along the way, there
are refreshment
bars, it is
possible to sit and eat
and drink red and white
wine. Also there is the
hospitality of the
Offidian people in
which offer carnival
delicacies.
After having passed through
all the streets, towards the evening (6:30 pm), in Piazza del
Popolo the bull is
killed in front of the Town Hall arcade and then taken away
singing "Addio Ninetta addio".
