In the
picene province and so
also Offida, the vine
cultivation goes back
to the past, according
to historics it is
prior to the roman
conquest.
In
recent times, exactly
around 1874, the
cultural structure of
Ascoli was essentially
based on binomial
grapevines -
cereals (carried
out by Jacini in 1880)
also called
seeding.
In
that time the vine
products of the area
were not of best
quality both for
the mixed cultivation
and for the system of
farming used, sapling
systems used to obtain
high returns but with
little attention given
to the quality of
productions.
Towards the end of the
century, thanks to
contributions from
various institutions
(practical school of
agriculture, traders
universities),
low rows of
vines were
implanted applicating
new producers in the
farming of vineyards
(firstly with the
lopping method).
Even the flagellum of
the vine louse
(small insect causing
vine disease), by the
end of the century,
brought a real turnover
in cultivation and
production
determinating a modern
and specialized
viticulture.
What remained was to
improve the process of
wine making, at
that time, infact, the
wine in order to be
well conserved, it was
boiled in large
cauldrons.
With the improvement of
the techniques in
vinification and better
places of conservation
(wine cellars),
it lead to the modern
art of wine making in
the Piceno.
In
nowadays the Piceno
territory dresses an
important role in the
production of wine in
the region, half of
the regional wine
production comes from
the territory of
Ascoli.
The quality level of
the wine production has
constantly expanded
during the years,
reaching prestigious
levels evidenced
either by the opinions
that the wines of the
Piceno meet through the
media and the
professionals of the
wine sector both by a
vast public of
consumers.
